The Central Government has notified the four Labour Codes, which came into effect on 21 November 2025, marking a significant shift in India’s labour law framework. These changes have important implications for non-profit organisations, including those with employees and those engaging contract workers.
To support non-profits in navigating this transition, we are launching a five-part series focused on understanding the Labour Codes from a compliance and operational perspective.
Part I provides an overview of the four Labour Codes and outlines their implications for employers, employees/workers, and contractors.

The Labour Codes establish a new compliance landscape that non-profit organisations will need to engage with proactively, particularly as rules and state-level notifications continue to be operationalised. A clear understanding of the structure and scope of the Codes is an important first step in assessing organisational responsibilities and potential areas of impact.
In the next edition of this series (Part II), we will take a closer look at preparing for compliance under the Code on Wages, 2019, with a focus on wage definitions, payment obligations, and practical steps non-profits can take to align their payroll and compensation practices with the new framework.
